What to Know About Roof Care
Anyone who owns a home or business is going to be faced with things like taking care of their roof. It is always important when buying a new building to check out the roof, but it remains important to properly handle any repairs as they arise as well. You might think that this is an occasional task to be dealt with, but according to the National Roofing Contractors Association you should actually be getting your roof checked twice a year.
Sometimes there is general maintenance involved in checking the roof safety, but other times it has to do with repair. If you live in an area where there are a lot of storms you might come to find that your roof suffers in those storms. It is imperative to get your roof checked after a big storm to make sure that the damage does not turn into even worse damage.
In addition to getting the actual roof checked, is it also important to get any chimneys and fireplaces checked at least once a year. The reason for this has to do with fires and their severity. It might sound rare, but each year there are 25,000 chimney fires in the United States alone. These chimney fires cause up to $125 million in damages each year. They are also mostly avoidable when proper maintenance is taking place.
Part of checking up on your chimneys includes chimney cleanings. When a chimney cleaning company comes to clean the chimney they can also look into any repair that might need to take place and they will alert you of that as well.
Additional services that you might consider are things like checking out your sidewalks, steps, and stairs. Those things are often more visible when they’re damaged since they are close by and with eye line. But that does not always mean that they are handled as quickly as they should be, and those can be quite dangerous when they’re not functioning at their highest potential.
You should also consider getting your gutters cleaned at least twice a year, but if your home is under a bunch of trees or you live in a high storm area you might need to get them cleaned more often than that. If you do not clean your gutters regularly they will get clogged full of debris and moisture which can become a detriment for the roof itself.
It might seem like a lot to consider for the homeowner but you have to keep in mind that maintenance is cheaper and easier than dealing with major damage down the line. It’s similar to taking care of your body as a preventative mechanism to stop illness from coming on. In this case and many others, maintainence can save you a lot of trouble overall.
