Three Red Flags to Watch Out For When Buying a House
Buying a house is a laborious process, but it’s well worth the effort. No matter how long it takes.
The thing is, you can’t settle, either. It’s okay to compromise on some things, like having a big kitchen, but there are other problems you cannot overlook. Here are just a few red flags to watch out for when buying a house.
Mold and Mildew.
As you look at the various local houses for sale, keep an eye out for white, green, and black colonies of mold in the basement, bathroom, kitchen, and laundry rooms. Not only does this mean that the house’s breathing air is unhealthy, but it also means that water is getting in somehow, and that the owners have not been taking care of the property. You do not want to go about buying a house with mold.
Fresh Paint on One Wall.
In order to make quick home sales, many sellers will paint rooms, and that’s okay. In fact, that’s actually a good thing, but if only one wall is painted, then they’re probably trying to hide something. There’s nothing like a fresh coat of paint to cover up water damage, mildew, mold, cracks, or damage. Don’t go about buying a house if the sellers have painted one — and only just the one — wall, and not the others.
A house’s foundations are obviously important, and should not have cracks. These cracks can let water get in, which will then cause water damage and mold to grow. If you’re thinking about buying a house, check out its basement for cracks or bulges that are over one-third of an inch big.
